Prayers Answered

2008 - Submitted by Joan Solms

(Excerpt from a longer letter.) On March 25, I and a friend, prayed that God would send children into the my friend's family. My friend wanted grandchildren. He prayed also. In March, son number two and his wife are expecting their first child after several years of marriage. Prayers answered.

My first encounter with Mary and the 1,000 Hail Mary's, an old Irish tradition, happened when  I was nine years old, a 4th grader at St. Basil Catholic school in Chicago.   We were told that the  recitation of  1,000 Hail Mary's on the Feast of the Annunciation was special and  prayers were more likely to be answered.

My brother who was three years older and in the 7th grade , wanted a dog and I wanted a baby sister.  We both prayed all day and far into the night to accomplish the goal of 1,000 Hail Mary's.

Whether it was the sincerity of my prayers or my child-like  confidence in God, I don’t know, but my prayers were heard and answered, but not in the way I expected.   Nine months later on December 14th, a brother was born….and three years later another brother. No sister, but two great brothers.  God does have a sense of humor.

My older brother also had his prayers answered, but he had to wait ten years.  He married a woman who loved dogs as much as he did and over the past 50 years of their marriage they have had a zoo. Never “a” dog, but always dogs, cats, birds, hamsters, fish, horses, cows, sheep, and chickens have graced their homestead.

Years passed without my reciting the 1,000 Hail Mary's . I have  only met one other person who was aware of this tradition. He too had recited the Hail Mary's way back in the early forties.  It is a handed-down belief that should be revived. Only good can come from it.  I started to work on the  spreading of  this tradition during the 80’s, but  other  events arose in my life and I put this crusade aside.

Recently on three other feast days, I recited the litany of Hail Mary's and had my prayers answered.  There were also times when I recited the Hail Mary's and am still hoping  for an answer. Perhaps it is No.  his year I shall pray for the conversion of the abortionists and staff at the Planned Parenthood center in Aurora, Illinois and for its’ closure.

I also want to commit myself to daily recitation of the Angelus. My intention, that  married couples  will be more generous in the creation of life.  Just  One More Soul.

Prayed for more grandchildren.  Nov. 10,2006 grandson was born.  July 25, 2007, granddaughter was born.   This was not a miracle. It was an answer to my prayers.

A Mother

The most important person on earth is a mother.
She cannot claim the honor of having built Notre Dame Cathedral.
She need not.
She has built something more magnificent than any cathedral,
a dwelling for an immortal soul, the tiny perfection of her baby's body.
The angels have not been blessed with such a grace.
They cannot share in God's creative miracle to bring new saints to Heaven.
Only a human mother can.
Mothers are closer to God the Creator than any other creature.
God joins forces with mothers in performing this act of creation.
What on God's good earth is more glorious than this:
to be a mother.
